John Deere 54C 54D 54X Mulching Kit Fits Many Models That Use 54C 54D 54X Deck

Very quick delivery, received it within 3 days and fit perfectly on my Z445 54" John Deere zero turn mower! Very easy to install. Removing the deck, removing the old blades and a couple other parts plus installing the kit and reconnecting the deck took less than an hour. Very easy to follow instructions!

I've been mowing with the stock side discharge for the last year and have always had a lot of clumped up grass that dries out and looks bad. Even with frequent mowings, the rate at which the grass grows always left me with large areas of streaked grass clippings. I was skeptical about this mulching kit. All of the reviews seem to discuss the ease of installation with no discussion of the cutting action. So here goes... Install was fairly straight forward. I was concerned about removing the deck on my Z425, but it was actually very simple. Reinstallation required two people to get the aft pins back in, but it was quick and painless. The only obstacle I ran into during install was a bracket on the very front of the deck that spans about a foot. I left that on and was able to install the plastic baffle, but when I tried to put the blade on, the baffle was far enough aft that it wouldn't let the blade spin. I simply removed the bracket (3 bolts) and reinstalled the baffle and it worked great. The bolts for attachment slid right into the holes on the deck. I fired it up and took it across a week's worth of growth in my back 2.5 acres. I am astounded at how well this thing mulches. I set the deck at 3" and the only thing left behind was where the large clumps of clippings from the last 3 months of mowing had aggregated. I expect those to be all but gone by the next time I mow. The clear areas of the yard show now signs of being mowed other than a very nice color gradient based on the direction I was going. I don't understand why JD doesn't just install this kit on all of their residential mowers. It's $60 worth of parts... which brings me to why I only gave it 4 stars. The particular kit I received appears to have been used. The plastic baffles were clean and new, but the blades came in a disheveled box that was sealed shut with about 20 pieces of masking tape. When I opened the box, there were grass clippings all over. The blades appeared clean and sharpened but were obviously used. For $200, I'd expect a new kit, but alas, I'm happy with the product and recommend it to anyone using a Z425 for residential purposes.

I have used the mulching kit twice now and am satisfied. It was easy to install, but way over priced.

Product works very well. grass mulched nicely. easy to install. Installation instructions not great but installation not dependent on instructions!

This is by far the best engineered product for mulching I’ve ever used. Installation was easy and reversible. The mulching kit practically eliminates visible grass discharge and resulted in an unexpected quieting of the mower. My wife even commented on how quiet the mower was and she could only hear the engine, not the mower.
